Plain Old Telephony Service (aka POTS) are going away. While this isn’t generally a business concern for most voice services (most businesses have already migrated to voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) or Cloud), this is a challenge for devices and systems that use a POTS line for monitoring and signaling.
Effective August 2, 2022 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will no longer make it a requirement for the carriers to maintain or support traditional POTS infrastructure. Many carriers are on a path to discontinue POTS line service and support within five years. Service rates for remaining POTS users are also on the rise and there is no telling how much monthly rates will increase.
If you have devices such as Fire, burglary alarms, elevator, gate entry systems, Fax machines and other devices that currently rely on a POTS line for their communications, contact Partners Technology to help plan for the future.
New federal E-911 laws (Kari’s Law and Ray Baum’s Act) requires business phone system are in compliance when making 911 calls. The most recent compliance date was January 6, 2021 for fixed multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) and January 6, 2020 for non-fixed MLTS calls. Non-compliance can lead to fines and put your employees and visitors at risk if an emergency arises and they are not able to reach 911. Contact our experts to schedule a consultation to make sure you are in compliance.
